There are a few characteristics which no fakes can match the real ones. Knowing these characteristics definitely helps one compare the real and fake diamond.
Diamonds, made of carbon compressed for centuries beneath the earth's surface, rate 10 on the Mohs scale, making them the hardest mineral known.
Real diamonds can scratch glass, ruby, sapphire, and even fake diamonds like Cubic Zirconia (CZ), which sparkle like real diamonds. Understanding these differences is crucial.
See through the diamond
The real stone breaks off the reflection of the dot, which makes it impossible for clear perception.
Fake diamonds, made of glass, show a clear dot. When buying diamonds, avoid viewing them over a jeweler's white tray. Request a newspaper or printed paper.
Place the diamond on the print. If you can read the alphabets through it, it's fake. Look for vague black marks. Check the bottom if mounted; if visible from the top, it's fake.
Reflection says it all
Real diamonds show gray reflections, while fake or low-quality ones produce rainbows or colorful reflections.
Foggy Affair
Determine diamond authenticity with the fog test: breathe over it; if fog lingers 2-4 seconds, it's fake. A real diamond clears instantly.
Joint Issue
To detect cheats who use a real diamond cap over a fake bottom, place the diamond in a glass of water. You'll spot a joint, if any, revealing the deception.
All Round Affair
A real diamond reflects light from all sides, while a fake one does not. Check your diamond from a side angle: a real stone shines all around, while a fake appears dull on the sides.
Heat is All it Takes
A heat test distinguishes real and fake diamonds. A real diamond won't feel hot afterward due to rapid heat dispersion, while a fake will become hot.
Scratch Me Not
Diamonds, as the hardest mineral, resist scratches. Fake diamonds often have visible scratches and scuffs. Use a magnifying glass to spot them.
Sharp at the Corner
Real diamonds have sharp facets due to their hardness. Fake diamonds have softer, rounded facets as they cannot be as finely cut.
This was all about what you need to know to spot the difference between diamonds. If you are doubtful, just check these characteristics in the stone you are holding in your hand. Apart from the 4 C's of diamonds, these characteristics are a dead giveaway in case you have a doubt.
