Board shorts first hit the fashion scene when people began surfing. Since those times, they have remained a popular garment for both men and women at the beach.
However, looking at the recent fashion trends, this garment, which was initially just beach wear, is finding it's feet amongst casual summer clothing.
You find men and women wearing board shorts during summers. The main reason behind their popularity, besides, the vibrant patterns, designs, and colors, is the body coverage they provide. As these shorts, unlike bikini bottoms and other kinds of shorts, cover the thighs and the hips, this makes them very popular in the plus size clothing segment.

Board shorts are available in 3 lengths―short ones which end around mid-thigh, the standard length ones which end just above the knee, and plus size ones which cover your knee as well as some portion of the lower leg as well.
As for fabrics, if you are going in for the branded ones, the most common material used is microfiber polyester, which is soft, comfortable, durable, and dries very quickly. Although nylon ones are available too, they score low in terms of comfort.
If you want the best, go in for those made from polyester and spandex. These are comfortable and provide much more flexibility and stretch.

Durability

Board shorts are much more reliable and durable than regular swimming shorts due to the way they are stitched. The seams are sewn with two or three needle stitching. For closure, you can choose from buttons, Velcro, zippers, or drawstrings.
There are some shorts which come with a combination such as buttons and drawstrings, or Velcro and drawstring, and hence, are even more reliable.
On the other hand, swimming trunks and swimsuits, which usually have just an internal drawstring and a mesh liner, are comparatively less reliable. Another advantage is that they come with pockets. So, you can easily keep your ID or your vehicle keys in them while enjoying the sun, sand, and the sea!

Colors and Patterns

Board shorts are available in many refreshing lively colors and patterns. Classy black, bright red, aqua blue, sunny yellow, fiery orange, and natural green are some of the popular fashion color choices.
As for the patterns, there are the floral prints which give a very tropical vibe. Then there are checkered and striped ones, shorts with stars and diamond designs, the ones with tribal patterns, the polka dot ones, etc. Plus size men and women should go in for darker colors and patterns with small designs.
These shorts are worn without an upper garment by men, although those with a flabby stomach can wear a loose T-shirt. As for women, these can be worn with some trendy tank tops, tankinis, T-shirts or the regular swimsuit. Board shorts look great on plus size people, making them feel comfortable and at ease with their bodies.
