Required Materials

  • Double-Pointed Needles
  • Darning Needles
  • Yarn
  • Scissors

Step 1

The first step depends on two conditions: one, the thickness of the yarn and, two, the size of the person's head, whom you are knitting the hat for. Based on these, the needle size should be decided, which is simple, bigger the head or thicker the yarn, bigger the needles. The standard size is U.S. 7 or 8. If knitting for an adult, you can use these to easily work with wool yarns. For a kid's hat, size U.S. 5 is the best.

Step 2

Now, choose the appropriate kind of yarn. Depending on the wearer's choice, you can select from a variety of natural fibers with pleasing colors, warm wool in soft colors, or even silk.

Step 3

In this step, use dpn to CO 48 sts in case of a child's hat and 60 sts in case of an adult. Divide the stitches between three of the four knitting needles. Ensure all the loops are on the top and there are no twists in the thread. If you find one, try to get rid of it as soon as possible, or else it might persist throughout your knitting session, and you might have to restart.

Step 4

In this step you start ribbing. For an adult's hat, the first 4'' must be ribbed and for a child's hat, the first 3'' must be ribbed. Work on the three sts by knitting and purling them until you have the proper amount of ribbing ready. Later, K until the final length of the hat reaches 9'' (adult) and 6'' (child).
Now add a Row Marker, and knit the next row like this: k2, k2tog. K the next row.
rep until you are left with 8 to 10 sts.
Immediately, cut a length of yarn measuring 10 inches.
Thread it with your needle by the remaining sts twice. And tie off.

Step 5

This is where you will give the finishing touches your hat. Neatly weave in the ends of the yarn at the top and bottom of the hat and here, your hat's ready to be worn. You are free to add a colorful, cute pom-pom at the top for some show or added attraction.
Note: As soon as you reach the end of the stitches on your double-pointed needles, knit one or two extra stitch(es) before you switch over to the empty needle. This will make the knitting look balanced and even.
There you have it, an extremely easy way to knit a toboggan hat. Try one for yourself, and if you find you are good at it, make a few for your loved ones as well, and surprise them.
